The ISO 14000 standards and documents are being developed with the following key principles in mind: To result in better environmental management To encompass environmental management systems and the environmental aspects of products To be applicable in all countries To promote the broader ISO 14000 is a descriptor for a set of standards that have been developed in response to this global concern about the environment. These standards represent a consensus agreement by national standards bodies around the world about the procedures that need to be followed in establishing an effective EMS. The primary ISO 14000 is a family of standards related to environmental management that exists to help organizations (a) minimize how their operations (processes, etc.) negatively affect the environment (i.e. cause adverse changes to air, water, or land); (b) comply with applicable laws, regulations, and other environmentally oriented requirements; and (c) continually improve in the above. The ISO 14000 standards do not propose environmental targets but provide organizations with the tools to evaluate the impact that their activities, products or services have on the environment. The first standard in the ISO 14000 series, ISO 14001, provides an organization with the requirements for an environmental management system (EMS) that ISO 14000 is a descriptor for a set of standards that have been developed in response to this global concern about the environment.
