GUNTHER Kress was a “scholarly giant” who set out to “make a difference”, his friends and family said. The 79-year-old died last month while he was working in Italy, leaving behind his wife Jill Brewster and four children – Michael, Emily, Rachel and Jonathan. Gunther Kress argues for a radical reappraisal of the phenomenon of literacy, and hence for a profound shift in educational practice. Through close attention to the variety of objects which children constantly produce (drawings, cuttings-out, 'writings' and collages), Kress suggests a set of principles which reveal the underlying coherence of children's actions; actions which allow us to Gunther Kress is Professor of English and Head of the School of Culture, Language and Communication at the Institute of Education, University of London. Theo van Leeuwen has worked as a film and television producer in the Netherlands and Australia and as Professor in the Centre for Language & Communication Research at Cardiff University.
